Madrid: Storm Filomena, Spain’s worst winter storm in decades, has caused damages of about €1.4 bn ($1.7 bn) in the capital Madrid, according to mayor Jose Luis Martinez Almeida. This number included revenue loss for the economy and damages to the infrastructure in the capital, he said. Madrid on Thursday continued to battle the fallout from the heavy snowfall of the weekend which was followed by a cold spell, news agency Europa Press reported. Many streets were still blocked five days after the heaviest snowfall in 50 years had ceased. Since the masses of snow could not be cleared quickly enough, the severe frost turned them into hard layers of ice that were difficult to remove. Temperatures in the Madrid area dropped to minus 12°C in the outskirts of the city again on Wednesday night. Somewhat milder temperatures are expected for next week. (dpa)
