Neymar returned to action in style as he scored for Paris Saint-Germain as the side beat arch rivals Marseille 2-1 to win this season’s Champions Trophy at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis stadium in Lens, France, on Wednesday.
The win also fetched coach Mauricio Pochettino the first trophy of his reign in France and managerial career.
The Champions Trophy is the French equivalent of a Super Cup, usually contested at the start of the season by the league champions and French Cup winners.
The Brazilian forward Neymar, who had been out of action since mid-December with an ankle injury, netted from the penalty spot in the second half (85th minute) to add to Mauro Icardi’s first-half opener.
Icardi found the back of the net in the first half to set Ligue 1 champions PSG on the road to victory against last season’s runners-up Marseille.
With PSG winning both last season, Marseille had been selected as their opponents as the Ligue 1 runners-up. This season’s edition was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Neymar replaced Angel Di Maria in the 65th minute for his first appearance in 2021.
Dimitri Payet pulled one back for Marseille in the 89th minute when he latched onto Florian Thauvin’s cross, but PSG held firm to give new coach Pochettino his second win in three games.
PSG’s other star Kylian Mbappe too had a chance but he started his run too early to connect with a long pass from his captain Marquinhos.
Icardi almost doubled his side’s lead in first half stoppage time when he hit a left-footed strike back off the crossbar.
Icardi thought he had given PSG the lead with a 22nd minute tap-in, only to have the goal ruled out for offside after Kylian Mbappe strayed past Marseille’s back line to collect Leandro Paredes’ super pass.
Neymar earlier was immediately targeted by Gonzalez, the Argentine fouling the superstar attacker several times.
However it was Neymar who had the last laugh when he stepped up to score the decisive second goal for PSG from the penalty spot after Icardi was brought down by Marseille’s substitute keeper Yohann Pele.
Scoreline: PSG 2 (Mauro Icardi 39’, Neymar 85’ (P)) bt Marseille 1 (Dimitri Payet 89’).
