More than 3,000 Rohingya Muslims were left without shelter after a fire broke out in one of the refugee camps in southern Bangladesh, an official said on Thursday.
The fire broke out at the Noyapara Rohingya camp in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar district in the morning, razing more than 500 makeshift homes, built mostly of bamboo shafts and polyethylene sheets, local government official Saiful Islam said.
No casualties were reported after the fire, which took the firefighters more than an hour to douse, he said.      The reason behind the fire could not ascertained, Islam said, adding more than 3,000 people used to live in those tents.
Aid agencies along with the local government are in the process of distributing shelter kits among the victims, he said.
Bangladesh has been hosting more than 1 million Rohingya Muslims in crowded camps in the south-eastern district of Cox’s Bazar after they fled prosecution in neighbouring Myanmar.
