The Philippines has granted emergency use authorization to the Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, amid warnings of a surge in cases due to a more contagious strain.
The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is the first to be given emergency use authorisation in the country, the Philippines’ FDA said on Thursday.
The shots can be given to people 16 years old and above, but must be administered by health professionals trained to control and manage possible adverse side-effects, said Eric Domingo, the FDA director general.
But the emergency use authorization does not allow the vaccine to be marketed or sold commercially in the Philippines, he added.
