Manchester United hit the top spot in the Premier League on Tuesday after winning 1-0 at Burnley.
Paul Pogba scored the only goal with a deflected volley on 71 minutes to put United three points ahead of champions Liverpool who are due to host United at Anfield in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.
“We know that the game today was very hard, very difficult and obviously we wanted to win,” Pogba said.
“We know it’s not easy to play here. We got the three points and we’re happy for that but there’s still a long way and now we focus again until the end of the season.” United were lucky to end the first half with 10 men after the video assistant referee (VAR) decided that Luke Shaw deserved only a yellow card for a studs-up challenge.
Harry Maguire had a header ruled out for a foul and Burnley held United until Pogba, set up by Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, fired United ahead.
Burnley remained 16th, just two places above the relegation zone. “The result is disappointing but we caused them a lot of problems,” Burnley defender Burnley James Tarkowski said. “We had some great chances at the end and should have put one away.
We are not far away. We are not too down.” Earlier, bottom side Sheffield United picked up their first win of the Premier League season as they beat 10-man Newcastle on Tuesday.
Ryan Fraser was sent off on half-time for a second yellow card and Billy Sharp scored the winner from the penalty spot on 73 minutes after VAR said Federico Fernandez had handled the ball.
Rhian Brewster hit the post for the hosts, who held on through six minutes of injury time to move to within three points of second-bottom West Brom. It was Sheffield United’s first league win in 186 days.
“I have been counting,” Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said. “Every minute of every hour of every day. “It feels good, I’m delighted. We should have got more results, we know that, but the performance was good.
“We played with the identity that has been the way we have played for the last few years. I should imagine the sending off and the penalty will be talked about but in my opinion we were value for the victory tonight.”
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said he had no problem with the red card but could not understand the awarding of the penalty.
“The referee got it spot on in real time,” Bruce said. “It hit
(Fernandez’s) hand but it’s not intentional. It could have been a foul on him as well.
“VAR is supposed to be for clear and obvious decisions. How someone 300 miles away on a TV screen can overturn it is beyond me.”
“You know when the referee goes to the screen it will be a penalty -
it’s pathetic. It’s beyond me.”
Everton moved back into the top four after they won 2-1 at Wolves,
their fourth away win in five games.
Alex Iwobi put Everton ahead and though Ruben Neves equalized eight
minutes later, Michael Keane headed the winner 13 minutes from time.
