In a stunning reversal Al Sailiya shocked defending champions Al Duhail 2-1 for their only third win in eight matches of the QNB Stars League at the Al Duhail Stadium on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Al Sadd continued their winning streak with a resounding 4-1 win over Al Wakrah at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. This was the Wolves’ fifth successive win (7th overall) in the league where they have only drawn one game and lost none and are at the top of the table with 22 points.
In another thrilling clash of the day, Al Arabi held Al Rayyan 1-1 at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
It was, however, the good show of Al Sailiya who rode on goals from Mohanad Ali (20th minute) and Serigne Mbodji (38th minute) to edge their fancied rivals for their third win.
Al Duhail’s late goal came through Eduardo Rodrigues (Dudu) in stoppage time (90+4) and more of a consolation.
Al Sailiya now have 11 points which places them on the sixth spot on the table, while Al Duhail remain on 12 points following their fourth defeat.
The Red Knights would be rueing the loss of early chance to go up when Ramin Rezaein, stationed close to Al Sailiya goalmouth, swivelled in the presence of two markers, but had little power on his shot to score in just the third minute of the match when Al Duhail had already won two corners.
There was another close action in the 11th minute when Edmilson Junior, after receiving a short pass off a corner, dribbled past an Al Sailiya defender and then unleashed a powerful shot that beat keeper Amine Lecomte with speed, but missed the crossbar by whisker.
Al Sailiya then turned on the screws with their first proper attack in the 20th minute as Mohanad pounced on a loose deflection following a corner kick and slipped in the ball past keeper Mohammed Al Bakri. It was the Iraqi striker’s sixth goal of the season.
Al Sailiya jumped to a 2-0 lead with a well-placed header by Mbodji off a corner kick by Nadir Belhadj. The towering Senegalese defender jumped high over his marker and connected well for his team’s second goal on the swinging corner kick taken by Belhadj.
In the 66th minute of what was a fast-paced match, Abdelrahman Mohamed of Al Duhail nearly pulled off a goal, off a neat cross from Mohanad, but his deflection from close range hit the post with Al Sailiya keeper well beaten.
A minute later, Al Duhail’s substitute Mohammed Muntari also missed the target in similar fashion, misdirecting his header from close range.
In the dying seconds of the match, Eduardo tapped the ball into the net from close range for Al Duhail’s consolation goal.
No stopping Al Sadd
Guided by coach Xavi Hernandez, Al Sadd continued with their winning ways drubbing Al Wahrah with ease.
Hassan Al Haydous (3rd minute), Abdelkarim Hassan (14th), Baghdad Bounedjah (71st) and Akram Afif (77th) scored for Al Sadd for their seventh victory -- an unbeaten record, the only team to do so thus far in the tournament.
Al Wakrah’s only goal came in the 69th minute in the form of an own goal by Akram.
The Wolves were in attacking mode from the start and they cruised to an early lead, with Al Haydous finding the target with a placing shot off an assist from Abdelkarim.
The left-back then turned the taker of a goal with a long shot, with Santi Cazorla setting him up.
Al Sadd dominated the rivals and could have scored more had it not been for bad luck.
Akram Afif almost scored at the stroke of half-time whistle as his chip shot hit the crossbar. This was after Al Haydous chipped the ball over the bar.
Akram had a goal ruled out for offside in the 41st minute.
Al Wakrah’s real chance came in the 45th minute, but Lucas Mendes’ long-range shot crashed against the right upright and Mohamed Benyettou was off-target with the rebound.
The Blue Wave had two other opportunities. Murad Naji’s free-kick was stabbed out by Al Sadd goalkeeper Meshaal Essa barshim and Cristian Ceballos sent his shot wide of the target.
Al Wakrah lifted their game in the second half and soon Boualem Khoukhi effected a goalline save off a shot from Ceballos. However, they could reduce the margin when Akram headed Ceballo’s free-kick into his own goal even as Ousmane Coulibaly too jumped high for the ball.
But Al Sadd were unrelenting and added two quick goals. Bounedjah found the mark with almost a solo effort and then Akram deflected in Abdelkarim’s cross to make it tough for Al Wakrah.
Al Sadd could now afford to rest some players and in came Musaab Khadir, Ahmed Bader Sayyar, Mohammed Waad and Rodrigo Tabata. The scoreline remained the same.
Al Arabi hold Al Rayyan
Abdulaziz Al Ansari’ strike in the 35th minute saw Al Arabi hold Al Rayyan to a 1-1 draw.
Abdulaziz Hatem had earlier scored for Al Rayyan and Al Arabi in the 19th minute. It was draw No.3 for both the sides.
After a cagey start to the week’s signature match featuring teams with perhaps the largest fan base in Qatar football, Al Rayyan captain Yacine Brahimi produced a powerful shot from just outside the Al Arabi box in the eighth minute, but the ball was deflected by Aron Gunnarsson who lunged forward and thrust his leg in the ball’s path. Al Arabi goalkeeper Sataa Al Abbasi quickly snapped the shot that had lost its sting by the deflection.
Abdulaziz Hatem opened the scoring through a spectacular shot from outside the Al Arabi box. After receiving a short pass from the midfield, he outpaced his marker Marc Martinez and unleashed a powerful left-footed drive that went through the palms of the goalkeeper and into the net.
In the 35th minute, striker Sebastian Soria helped Al Arabi draw parity. Lurking inside the Al Rayyan box with a marker close by, he back-heeled a short cross to an unmarked Al Ansari who fired a right-footed drive into the top of Al Rayyan net, leaving keeper Fahad Younis rooted to his spot.
The second half failed
to produce another goal and the teams settled for yet another draw. Results
