Qatar reaffirmed that the peaceful settlement of the Palestine cause should be based on the resolutions of international legitimacy, the road map and the Arab peace initiative, as well as the achievement of the two-state solution that guarantees establishing a Palestinian state on the basis of June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The settlement should also be based on ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan, ensuring the rights of the Palestinian people and finding a fair solution for the refugee issue, Qatar said in a statement delivered by the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani before the UN General Assembly in its 75th session to discuss the Palestinian cause.
HE Sheikha Alya affirmed that Qatar supports all the efforts aimed at solving the Palestinian issue and achieving peace in the middle east. “Qatar supports all the annual General Assembly resolutions on the issue of Palestine and the Middle East, based on the principles of the international laws, the purposes enshrined in the UN charter, and respect of human rights and the maintenance of international peace and security,” she said.
Qatar will continue to provide political and humanitarian support for the benefit of the Palestinians, she said, explaining that Qatar’s support exceeds $1 billion through the Qatar Fund for Development and the Gaza Reconstruction Committee. This is in addition to the contributions provided by the institutions of civil community, as aid was provided in areas including education, electricity supply, infrastructure, housing maintenance and construction, and employment financing, she said.
HE Sheikha Alya pointed out the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani directed, this year, to provide $150 million to cover humanitarian needs, including addressing the coronavirus pandemic and its effects.
She indicated that Qatar has recently raised its contribution to UNRWA, stressing that the role played by the agency is very important and indispensable in order to meet the basic needs of millions of Palestinian refugees and ensure stability.
“The deterioration of the economic situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is a worrisome issue, especially in the Gaza Strip, which is still under siege. It has caused great human suffering,” she said, stressing the importance of the economic stability in realising security and stability.
“Israel’s occupation of Arab lands, attempts to annex Palestinian lands illegally, settlement activity in the occupied territory, measures aimed at changing the character, legal status and demographic composition of Jerusalem, the siege of the Gaza Strip, the use of excessive violence against civilians, arbitrary detention, obstruction of freedom of movement, demolition of Palestinian homes, exploitation of their natural resources and other violations constitute flagrant violation of international law and UN resolutions,” she explained.
HE Sheikha Alya renewed Qatar’s commitment to providing all support for the Palestinian brothers, and its firm position in solidarity with the Palestinian people to achieve their just and legitimate rights.
