The Qatar Athletics Federation will once again play host to the Wanda Doha Diamond League meeting in the new season on May 28, 2021.
The Wanda Diamond League on Tuesday released its provisional calendar for the 2021 season, which will see a return to a full schedule of 14 meetings culminating in a winner-takes-all season finale in Zurich.
Recently, Doha’s Qatar Sports Club hosted a revised 12-event programme for the Wanda Doha Diamond League 2020 on September 25 which concluded with some exceptional performances from world athletes including pole vault world record holder Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis of Sweden, who emerged on top.
Now in its 12th annual cycle, the track and field’s premier season-long competition will begin on May 23 with the Meeting International Mohammed VI in Rabat, Morocco.
The series will then head to the Doha Diamond League five days later.
Rome will host the first European meeting of the season on June 4, before athletes head to Oslo a week later.
Following stops in Stockholm, Monaco and London in the first two weeks of July, there will be a month-long pause for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The series will resume in Shanghai on August 14 before a continent-spanning double-bill the following weekend. Saturday, August 21 will see the new Hayward Field in Eugene host its first Wanda Diamond League meeting, while Sunday 22 will host the first edition of a brand new Diamond League meeting in China, details of which are to be announced in due course.
Athletes will return to Europe for the final leg of the season, with meetings in Lausanne, Paris and Brussels before the season finale in Zürich from 8-9 September.
In the first 13 meetings, athletes will earn points in a bid to qualify for a place in the final, where they have the chance to win the Diamond Trophy and be crowned Wanda Diamond League champion in their chosen discipline.
he calendar is strictly provisional at this stage and remains subject to changes depending on the global health situation in 2021.
