Qatar Charity (QC) celebrated World Children’s Day on Saturday, November 20. The day aims to promote international togetherness, raise awareness among children around the world and improve the welfare of children. This year, the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is very important especially given the exceptional circumstances of the continuing outbreak of coronavirus, which has brought many obstacles to children. This pandemic has led to economic problems that have severely affected children, while millions of other orphaned children, as well as those from poor families, may have to enter the labor market due to the negative impact of the covid-19.
Child Labour
According to the International Labor Organization, more than 152 million children are engaged globally in the labour market, and 72 million of them perform hazardous work, face challenging situations, and work longer hours.
Qatar Charity is one of the most important international organisations paying close attention to orphan care by providing quality education, shelter and all other requirements to help them continue their studies. Qatar Charity also provides educational services to students across the globe in disaster-hit areas, as well as in poor communities.
‘Rofaqa’ Initiative
Qatar Charity is one of the world’s largest orphan sponsors, with more than 175,000 children sponsored on three continents through its Rafaqa Global Humanitarian Initiative for Orphan Care. Qatar Charity provides comprehensive care to orphans in the health, education and social fields. Sheik Aisha bint Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Attiyah Model Orphans City has been built in Sudan. The work at Taiba Education City, carried out by Qatar Charity, is nearing completion. It aims to provide comprehensive care to 600 orphans and is expected to benefit 6,600 orphans and their families in the areas south of Khartoum State.
The Khubaib Bin Adi (R) Orphanage is home to hundreds of orphans and students in Bangladesh, where Qatar Charity also has other orphanages.
Excellence Award
Qatar Charity (QC) has won the Orphan Care Excellence Award (Kafel) for the current year from the Regional Network for Social Responsibility in cooperation with regional and international organisations and bodies.
During its participation in the activities of the Third World Conference on Orphan Care 2020, which was organised remotely, Qatar Charity received the award for its role in supporting comprehensive orphan care services in the social health, education and entertainment sectors.
Education in Emergencies
In the field of education, Qatar Charity works in more than 30 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe. The protection of education in crisis-affected areas is one of the most important areas of work of Qatar Charity, as it seeks to provide quality education in many countries and refugee camps. Concerning education in emergencies, Qatar Charity works on setting up, furnishing and repairing educational institutions, providing school bags, textbooks and school fees, and offering e-learning services to ensure quality education for all. For example, it has provided fee education for returning children in Somalia. Qatar Charity implemented projects and provided education support in crisis and disaster situations at a cost of more than 64 million Qatari Riyals between 2019 and 2020.
E-Learning
Qatar Charity printed one million textbooks and distributed 10 million textbooks to schoolchildren in 2019 and 2020. In view of the lack of recognition of academic certificates in the conflict with Syria, which was a major challenge for the education sector, Qatar Charity, in partnership with the World Refugee School (WRS), designed an e-learning project to provide internationally recognized certificates to children. To this end, Qatar Charity has designed an integrated digital platform and digital labs in schools where students can carry out assignments.
Baby Care
Qatar Charity, with the support of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), has implemented a health project for pregnant women in Lebanon. The project offers free healthcare services to underprivileged Syrian pregnant refugees in Lebanon. This project creates a joyful atmosphere for the reception of a newborn by providing all the necessary facilities.
