HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Foundation, has called for making health an integral component to living a fulfilled life.
“We need to take a step back and look at health as an integral component to living a fulfilled life. It needs to be part of a holistic learning environment that we create for our children,” Sheikha Hind said during a panel discussion at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) 2020 on Thursday.
She was among the forum panelists who discussed ‘The Role of Schools in Child and Adolescent Health’.
She said when “we think of mental health, it is a critical subject that is really missing in our education system”. However, she didn’t think that adding it to school’s assignments or looking at it as a matrix to improve school performance is going to solve the issue.
“If we look at the issue more holistically, the first step becomes identifying how schools themselves are contributing to the mental health crisis such as what are the effects of regular exams on children, competitive sports and bullying,” she added.
Sheikha Hind said to ensure students’ wellbeing they needed to look about creating a less anxious future for them.
Talking about how to empower children, Sheikha Hind said, “To empower children is to give them adequate tools that can cater to their unique needs and allow them to grow in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.” page 14
