Indian expatriate writer Beena has won a literary award instituted by Keralite expatriate forum Sanskriti in Doha.
The award was announced by the office bearers of the forum at a press conference on Monday. Beena’s short story titled ‘Ceramic City’ won the award that carries a cash prize and a certificate of appreciation.
Beena, who hail from Kanhangad in Kasaragod district in the southern Indian state of Kerala, is a teacher at a school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and has authored two novels in Indian language Malayalam.
The award instituted by the forum in memory of noted writer late CV Sreeraman is conferred upon Indian expatriate writers in the GCC region above the age of 18 for promoting Malayalam literature among Indian expatriates.
The award will be conferred symbolically on the writer at function in Doha on Friday.
The award distribution ceremony will also feature a variety of cultural programmes.
A panel of jury that included prominent writers Ashokan Charuvil, EP Rajagopal and Ashtamoorthy in Kerala nominated Beena for the award from a total of 62 entries received from different countries in Gulf region.
CV Sreeraman is considered an outstanding writer in Malayalam, who won the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy Award and Kerala Sahitya Academy Award for his collections of short stories.
Sanskriti office bearers Sunil Kumar, Santhosh Thoonery and EM Sudhir attended the press conference.
