From switching off lights for an hour to conserve energy, doing a carpool among hotel staff to help reduce air pollution and replacing plastic-based straws and take away bags with eco-friendly alternatives, many hotel establishments in the country have come up with various creative ways to promote sustainability practices in support of the fifth edition of Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW 2020).
QSW is the national campaign of Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) aimed at furthering the engagement of the community in a wide range of sustainability-oriented activities. This year, the activities are taking place from October 31 to November 7.
During the week-long campaign, Crowne Plaza Doha-The Business Park and Holiday Inn Doha-The Business Park have announced Car Pool Week for their staff.
“Carpooling is better for the environment; fewer cars on the road means reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions,” stated a description of the activity posted on QSW website.
Both hotels will also observe Lights Off activity on November 4 for an hour starting 3pm. In addition, The Business Park’s staff cafeteria for breakfast and lunch will also offer vegan options citing the benefits of “reducing meat intake for the carbon footprint, animal welfare, antibiotic resistance and health”.
Movenpick Hotel Doha is marking QSW 2020 with a campaign against single use plastic.
“We have replaced our plastic based straws, stirrers and take away bags with eco-friendly alternatives and are in the process of replacing in-room plastic based amenities and take away boxes along with cutlery for food items as well,” according to the QSW website.
On November 1, the hotel held a ‘No Elevator Day’ campaign to reduce energy consumption and encourage some exercise among its staff and guests.
The Ritz-Carlton Doha is marking the week-long campaign with sustainability practices ranging from waste segregation practices to zero wastage of food.
Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel is hosting healthy corner in its cafeteria, reduce cartons from suppliers and staff awareness on sustainability.
Warwick Doha Hotel has also come up with various activities to engage staff and guests in its sustainability efforts. Among the activities the hotel is hosting until November 5 are yoga session, Meatless Day, Print Less Day and Less Light Day.
On its part, The Royal Riviera Hotel Doha has listed a blood donation drive on November 7. It is urging all its guests and staff to participate in the volunteering event.
On the QGBC website, it is stated that from 2016 to 2019, about 110,000 people took part in around 760 events organised for the nationwide sustainability week campaign.
