Record champions Real Madrid came from behind late on to draw 2-2 with Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Champions League, whilst title holders Bayern Munich and 2019 winners Liverpool maintained their perfect start.
Gladbach found themselves two-up with just half an hour left thanks to a brace from Marcus Thuram. However, Real refused to give up, with Casemiro equalising in the third minute of injury time after Karim Benzema had pulled one back.
Bayern prevailed 2-1 at Lokomotiv Moscow for their 13th victory in a row in the competition. Leon Goretzka’s early strike was cancelled out by Anton Miranchuk, but a well-hit Joshua Kimmich volley earned his side all three points.
Liverpool also remained perfect with a 2-0 over debutants Midtjylland, with the opening goal from Diogo Jota their 10,000th in club history. Mohamed Salah converted a penalty in stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Atalanta came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Ajax, Manchester City beat hosting Olympique Marseille 3-0 to also make it two wins out of two, Porto won 2-0 against Olympiacos, and Inter played out a goalless draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.
Real were slow out of the blocks last week against Donetsk in their 3-2 defeat, and although they rebounded with a weekend Clasico win at Barcelona they fell behind again in Moenchengladbach.
Thuram opened the scoring through a blistering counter-attack in the 33rd minute, and he doubled his side’s lead after the break when he finished off from Alassane Plea’s blocked shot.
It took Madrid 87 minutes to get on the scoresheet thanks to Benzema’s close-range finish, but they had an equaliser soon after when Casemiro smashed into the roof of the net off captain Sergio Ramos.
Last-placed Real now face back-to-back games against Inter as they look to qualify from the group for the first knockout round – something which they have never failed to do.
“We fought all the way to the final whistle,” Casemiro said. “Right now we are not in a comfortable place in our group but you take a point when you can get it.”
