Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani has ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident at the Hamad International Airport (HIA), according to the Government Communication Office (GCO).
In a statement on Wednesday, the GCO said, “The results of the investigation will be shared with our international partners. Qatar remains committed to ensuring the safety, security and comfort of all travellers transiting through the country.”
The GCO said the urgently-decided measures taken “with some travellers” after the discovery of an unidentified newborn child at HIA were to prevent the perpetrators and those involved from escaping and leaving the country.
The statement expressed regrets for any distress or infringement on the personal freedoms of any traveller caused by this action.
“On October 2, 2020, a newborn infant was found in a trash bin, concealed in a plastic bag and buried under garbage at HIA. The baby girl was rescued from what appeared to be a shocking and appalling attempt to kill her. The infant is now safe under medical care in Doha,” the statement said.
Moreover, the statement said this was the first instance of an abandoned infant being discovered in such a condition at HIA. This egregious and life-threatening violation of the law triggered an immediate search for the parents, including on flights in the vicinity of where the newborn was found.
