Qatar’s senior health officials have continued to urge the public to take the seasonal flu vaccine, describing it as both safe and effective in fighting influenza viruses.
The vaccine is available for free across all Primary Health Care Corporation’s (PHCC) health centres, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) clinics and at more than 40 private clinics and hospitals as well as semi-governmental healthcare facilities.
Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) Co-chair of the National Pandemic Preparedness Committee and Director of Health Protection and Communicable Disease Control at the Public Health Department Dr Hamad Al Rumaihi said, “The influenza vaccine is safe and effective. Qatar has taken steps to ensure anyone who needs the flu vaccine this year will be able to access it both safely and without cost.”
MoPH has built a strong partnership with private healthcare providers to ensure easy access to the vaccine and increase levels of immunisation against the flu in our community.
HMC Head of the Infectious Diseases Division Dr Abdullatif Al Khal enphasised the importance of taking the vaccine because influenza virus changes.
“With the changes that happen to the influenza viruses every year, it is very important to ensure that you take the flu vaccine for this season,” he said, adding that those who are vaccinated are more protected compared to those who are not vaccinated.
MoPH Head of Vaccination Unit, Health Protection and Communicable Disease Control Department Dr Soha Al Bayat said the seasonal influenza vaccine is available in clinics at HMC, PHCC health centres and more than 40 private clinics.
HMC Medical Director of the Communicable Diseases Center Dr Muna Al Maslamani said, “While the flu and COVID-19 are two different viruses. It is important to ensure that you are protected against the seasonal flu this year.”
HMC Executive Director of Corporate Infection Prevention and Control Dr Jameela Al Ajmi said, “Getting flu vaccine is the best and safest way to reduce the chance of catching the flu and reducing the possibility of spreading the virus among the members of the society.”
This season, the MoPH targets to vaccinate around 500,000 people in a campaign that will continue until February/March 2021, which is a higher number compared to previous years when 200,000 people were targeted.
