Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) has announced on Tuesday the programme line-up and new feature of the fifth edition of its hugely successful national campaign Qatar Sustainability Week (QSW 2020) taking place from October 31 to November 7.
The week-long event aims to further engage the community in a wide range of sustainability-oriented activities.
The annual event which started in 2016 has so far attracted more than 100,000 participants from all walks of life across Qatar in the last four years.
At a virtual press conference on Tuesday, Eng Meshal Al Shamari, director of QGBC, said, “We believe that the success of Qatar Sustainability Week cannot be achieved without the private and public sectors that support our mission. These partnerships are very important for us to define solutions to challenges in different sectors in Qatar and the region. Year after year, we hope to make a big step towards fostering sustainability culture in Qatar and the region. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the whole world, we have come up with innovative and attractive initiatives and activities for the event participants that comply with health and social distancing requirements.”
Among the featured activities this year are seminars and conferences, including the QGBC Focus Day on ‘Green Hospitality for FIFA World Cup 2022’ in partnership with the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) scheduled on November 1. The first Focus Day will include a workshop with representatives from Green Key International and the hospitality sector in Qatar to present an overview of Green Key certification, best practices and case studies from Qatar.
The second Focus Day is the ‘World Green Building Council - Better Places for People MENA Launch’ scheduled on November 5. The Better Places for People is WorldGBC’s global project to support GBCs and their members to increase the demand and supply of green buildings which are supportive of the health, wellbeing and productivity of the people within them. QGBC will be hosting the virtual event that will highlight the ongoing efforts among the regional stakeholders in promoting the health and wellbeing agenda as a key driver to the wider sustainability and climate actions.
Other events are school campaigns, awareness programmes, tree planting, nutrition and wellness events, waste recycling drives and sand dune clean-up, among others.
Al Shamari also mentioned that this year they have introduced Register a Pledge feature which is open to corporates and individuals to register their pledges on making changes in their lifestyle towards applying more sustainable actions.
This year’s QSW’s Strategic Partners include the SC, Msheireb Properties, The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) through its National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), Qatar National Bank (QNB), Tadmur Holding, Al Wakrah Municipality and Qatar Museums, in addition to community partners Greener Future and Doha Environmental Actions Group.
Also present at the press conference were Shireen Obeidat, QGBC events & marketing specialist; Hamoda Youssef, QGBC head of Technical Affairs; and Abdulrahman Al Muftah, sustainability and environment specialist, representing the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.
