About 105 participants from Qatar, Indonesia and other countries took part in a webinar aimed at celebrating diversity and promoting nationalism among Indonesian youth.
Titled ‘Re-imagining the Youth Pledge: The Role of Indonesian Young Diaspora in the 21 Century’, the webinar was held to commemorate the 92nd annual Youth Pledge Day which falls on October 28.
It was hosted by the Embassy of Indonesia in Doha in collaboration with the Indonesian Community Association in Qatar (PERMIQA) and the Indonesian Students Association in Qatar (PPIQ).
According to the organisers, the Youth Pledge Day is considered one of the most important events in creating Indonesia’s nationalism and its struggle to fight colonialism. On October 28, 1928, a group of young people from multiple organisations and representing different ethnicities, social statuses and religions gathered in Jakarta to declare one motherland, one nation and one language: Indonesia.
“The Youth Pledge Day is important for Indonesians for at least two reasons. First, it is a reminder for the nation to preserve unity, and the second, it is the event for the country to embrace diversity,” said Maulana Syahid, Charge d’Affaires at the embassy.
Currently, there are 16,690 Indonesian citizens living and working in Qatar. PERMIQA (Persatuan Masyarakat Indonesia di Qatar), which actively represents the communities during important local events, is a non-profit organisation. It functions as an umbrella organisation for around 62 different Indonesian community groups in Qatar catering to diverse interests such as sports, arts and culture, and hobbies. The organisation also closely works with the embassy to create events involving Indonesian nationals.
PPIQ (Perkumpulan Pelajar Indonesia di Qatar) is a non-profit organisation comprising Indonesian students who are currently studying in Qatar.
Its membership is open to all Indonesian students who are currently pursuing a long-term study in one of the local schools/universities in Qatar. It aims to strengthen the relationship among Indonesian students in Qatar as well as to build stronger connection with other communities in Qatar. It also aspires to promote Indonesian culture, culinary heritage and tourism to the local community in Qatar as well as to inspire every student in Indonesia to keep pursuing their passion and dreams.
