FIFA president Gianni Infantino has no interest in a European Premier League, he said in an interview with Swiss CH Media.
“I’m not interested in Bayern against Liverpool, I’m interested in Bayern against Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires,” Infantino said.
As the boss of the football international ruling body he said he was interested in “the Club World Cup, not in the European Premier League.” Infantino explained his goal is that “in the future clubs outside of Europe to also have international appeal.” “We won’t take the Bundesliga away from anybody,” he said.
The European Premier League is a proposed top-level competition that would involve the biggest clubs from England, Spain, Germany,
Italy and France.
Two years after German magazine Der Spiegel leaked documents that included plans of major European clubs forming a new elite league starting from 2021, new media reports have surfaced recently.
These reports suggest Liverpool and Manchester United have joined talks over the construction of the new tournament, which would reportedly be funded to the sum of six billion dollars by Wall Street bank JP Morgan.
Bayern Munich chairman told Sky television he had “no knowledge” of th plan and Aleksander Ceferin, president of the European ruling body UEFA, said his organization was “very happy” with the current Champions League.
FIFA have already reformed its Club World Cup but the first edition, with 24 teams, has been delayed from summer 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
