The Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association Qatar (AMUAAQ) celebrated the 203rd birth anniversary of the university’s Founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan recently at Hilton Doha hotel in Doha recently.
The working committee consisted of Jawed Ahmed (Sr. Advisor), Moen Azmi (President), Aqueel Ahmed (GS), Zia Alam (Treasurer), Irshad Ahmed, Mazhar Khan, Mohd Obaidullah, Mohammed Imran, Mohd Khubaib, Kashif and Naimi led the celebrations.
In view of the COVID-19 restrictions in Qatar, Sir Syed Day-2020 was organised on digital platform. More than 200 alumni and well-wishers from across the world joined together online to pay their tribute to Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and mark the day with pride and jubilation. The programme started with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Muaaz Khan and Ayesha Khan, and the event was anchored by Mohammed Obaidullah.
Aqueel Ahmed welcomed the members of Alig fraternity and their families to the celebration. He shared his thoughts on the vision of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and the emotional connect of alumni with their alma mater. Moen Azmi delivered the presidential speech highlighting the pivotal role that the AMU alumni, better known as Aligs in the fraternity, play in carrying on the legacy of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan forwards and in fulfilling his mission. He advocated the need for the alumni to integrate with the university to work towards the cause of ameliorating the educational backwardness of the marginalised sections of the society, particularly in India.
The Programme was graced Zafarul Islam, former chairman of the Minority Commission of Delhi; Dilip Pandey, MLA Delhi; Suhail Sabir, Pro VC USTM Meghalaya; Ajay Choudhry IPS, joint commissioner of Police Delhi; Prof Sufyan Beg, principal, ZHCET and chairman, AMU Alumni Affairs; Prof Waseem Khan, chief proctor, Jamia Milia Islamia; Siraj Qureshi, president IICC; and S M Khan, former director general Press Information Bureau.
They all shared their thoughts on Sir Syed’s vision and his exemplary role in education reforms. Ajay Choudhary, also an alumnus of AMU, advocated for Bharat Ratna to be bestowed upon Sir Syed for his exemplary services rendered in nation building which was backed by his unshakable beliefs in the unity of the society as a whole.
Ravish Kumar, senior executive dditor of NDTV, an eminent opinion leader and recipient of Ramon Magsaysay Award, conveyed his good wishes and complimented the alumni on SS Day.
Sharique Khan, chief correspondent of NDTV India, shared his congratulatory messages and elicited his thoughts on this occasion.
Some of the accomplished alumni and office bearers of global chapters of the AMU Alumni Association shared their congratulations and good wishes on the event. Haroon Khan, president AMUOBA Oman; Dr Ajax Mohamed, president AMURSA Germany; Dr Abdullah, president AMUOBA USA; Dr Tanvir Ahmed, president AMUOBA New York; Athar, president AMUOBA New Zealand; Dr Shaheer Khan, president, AMUOBA North California; Shujaur Rahman, CEO, Garware Technical Fibres Ltd, Pune also spoke on the occasion.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Mazhar Khan, acting vice president of the AMUAAQ.
