Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has launched the ‘Blossom’ campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection and prevention.
‘Blossom’ is a national campaign targeting all categories of the Qatari society throughout the month of October every year. It aims to emphasise the importance of periodic examination for early detection of the disease, spread the culture of healthy life style as a preventive measure, and highlight the health services available for cancer patients in Qatar. It also seeks to stress the society’s role in providing psychological and financial support for cancer patients as well as to reveal the experiences of individuals living with cancer.
Dr Hadi Mohammed Abu Rasheed from the Professional Development and Scientific Research Department at QCS said, “According to the latest Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR) of the Ministry of Public Health, in 2016 there were 266 new breast cancer cases in Qatar. As many as 3 percent of all newly-diagnosed breast cancer cases in 2016 were male and the rest were female, while 25.94 percent of the new cases in 2016 were Qataris and 74.06 percent were non-Qataris.”
“In 2016, the cumulative risk for women up to the age of 74 years was 8.4 percent, which means almost one out of 12 women are likely to develop breast cancer before the age of 75 years in Qatar,” Dr Abu Rasheed said, pointing that almost 64 percent of new cases of breast cancer in Qatar in 2016 were diagnosed in the early stages -- stage 1 or stage2.
According to QNCR, from 2013 to 2015, females breast cancer survival rate was 82.3 percent, while during 2013-2016 the survival rate increased to 89.07 percent, which means 89.07 percent of females diagnosed with breast cancer between 2013 and 2016 were still alive up to 2016, he added.
He noted that QCS organises virtual workshops for healthcare providers on breast cancer.
Heba Nassar from the Health Education Department at QCS said, “Blossom campaign this year focuses on raising awareness of breast cancer, its signs and symptoms, risk factors, prevention methods, early detection and the importance of community support for people living with breast cancer. QCS has launched the awareness campaign via its electronic platforms, within the framework of the preventive measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus, by broadcasting awareness messages and videos related to breast cancer.”
Several public figures are participating in the campaign, including Dr Irtefaa Al shammari, breast surgeon; Salah Al Yafei, educational trainer; Abdulaziz Sadiq, caricature artist; Sheikha Al Mannai, TV presenter; Afra Al Marri, make-up artiste, Badour Al Mousawi, sports scientist, Aspetar Hospital; and Iman Al Falikawi, educational trainer; Perf - Up Center.
