THE sixth campaign to remove abandoned cars started on Sunday within the administrative boundaries of Al Wakrah Municipality. The campaign is being implemented by the Joint Committee for the Removal of Neglected Cars in the State, the Mechanical Equipment Department and the Public Cleaning Department of the ministry, in cooperation with Al Wakrah Municipality.
The campaign is part of the continuous efforts of the ministry in line with Law No (18) of 2017 regarding public cleanliness.
Mohammed Faraj Al Kubaisi, assistant director of the Public Cleaning Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and a member of the committee, said that the campaign targeting Al Wakrah Municipality will continue for a week until the completion of the removal of all neglected cars in the municipality.
He pointed out that awareness campaigns will be intensified to deal with neglected cars in residential areas or industrial workshops or elsewhere, calling on the public to cooperate with the concerned authorities in reporting neglected cars.
The total number of abandoned cars that have been removed by the committee since its first formation according to Ministerial Resolution No. (89) of 2013 amounted to more than 81,000 from all regions of the country, as about 44,000 people have been disposed of during that period, and necessary measures are being taken against the remaining vehicles.
In 2019, the committee organised a comprehensive campaign in cooperation and coordination with all municipalities, separately, to withdraw neglected vehicles and place them in custody.
Annually, the committee removes about 12,000 to 15,000 neglected vehicles, while about 500 cars are returned to their owners every month after they complete the procedures and pay the fine of QR1000, and the transportation fees.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has designated a site for collecting discarded cars in the Al Mazroua area in Umm Slal Municipality with a capacity of 25,000 to 30,000 cars, in addition to the current two sites for collecting cars in Al Wakrah and Mesaimeer.
