The Qatar University Health Cluster (QU-Health) Continuing Professional Development ( CPD) hosted an interactive live webinar entitled ‘Vaccine Coverage and Community Health’ aimed at discussing the principles of vaccines and immunisation, vaccine-preventable diseases and the Qatar Immunisation Programme.
The training session aimed at educating health professionals on the role of vaccination in the prevention of disease spread, and raising awareness of the comprehensive national immunisation programme.
Vaccination is considered to be one of the most successful interventions in modern medical practice; they improve the overall quality of life and prevent unnecessary death and suffering. Qatar is following the World Health Organization’s vaccine schedule by offering an enhanced immunization program and developing an advanced and modern child immunization program that is freely available to all residents. The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NITAG) is also constantly reviewing and adjusting the vaccination schedule in line with trends in disease prevention in the country.
Dr Susu Zughaier, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the College of Medicine, QU-Health, led the webinar and said, “It is important that all health professionals have a fundamental understanding of the principles of immunisation in this COVID-19 pandemic. There is so much in the media about vaccine development that it can lead to public anxiety – it is therefore essential that health professionals are informed to respond to questions and help reassure the patients they are caring for.”
The event was organised by Qatar University-Health in collaboration with experts from the Primary Health Care Corporation as part of their ongoing professional development programme.
Dr. Khalid Elawad, Health Protection Manager at PHCC, presented Qatar’s continued efforts to strengthen the national immunisation programme. “The Vaccine Coverage and Community Protection Webinar demonstrates the significant benefits of the partnership between educational institutions and service providers. This collaboration helps to build an informed healthcare system, including government, private and semi-private institutions, which will lead to a stronger immunization program in Qatar.”
The QU-Health CPD Unit has worked hard to harness the efforts of local experts to work together to develop further education and training activities. The six-part Research Skills Webinar series will begin on 29 September and will be available to a global audience on YouTube. This highly relevant series will be produced at a time when more and more research is being published on the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to encourage health professionals and educators to develop their skills in conducting and interpreting research.
QU-Health CPD Coordinator Dr. Zachariah Nazar said, “We, as CPD providers, have a significant responsibility to ensure that our health care workers have the convenient means to access the most relevant education and training to support their practice in these challenging times.”
