THE Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants Doha LLC(G) conducted a webinar on ‘Internal Audit in the Time of COVID-19’ on Friday.
Around 60 PICPA members, associates and guests took part in the session facilitated by Sherman Ilustre, chairman for Education, and Mary Ann Salubo, associate volunteer for Education.
Keynote speaker Zaida P Lazaro of AXA Philippines shared her views on how COVID-19 impacted the internal audit function and how international auditors should respond.
She provided an overview of the internal audit before the pandemic, how it was impacted by COVID-19, and a post-pandemic internal audit function. She also discussed the challenges encountered by internal audit, as well as the strategies on how to address them.
“This pandemic gives us the opportunity to also think deeper and realise that we still have room for improvement”, said Lazaro.
In this time of pandemic, Lazaro reiterated the value-adding role of internal auditors not just by doing the normal audit per se, but also taking advisory roles, from conducting a face to face audit to remote auditing, and maximising the use of digital tools and remote auditing procedures.
She stressed the need for constantly reassessing the appropriateness of the existing business practices and the audit approach used, describing its as an ongoing process. She ended the seminar by stressing the need to be flexible and resilient as we are in a volatile, uncertain, complex, or ambiguous world as we may describe what we are going through in these challenging times.
