CHINA is keen to further strengthen bilateral relations with Qatar in sectors including research, education, high tech industries and smart technology, Ambassador of China to Qatar HE Zhou Jian has said.
He was speaking on the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, at a simple ceremony held at Hotel Ritz Carlton Doha.
Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti; Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, HE Ibrahim Fakhro; HE Ali Ibrahim Ahmed, Ambassador of Eritrea and head of Diplomatic Corp; HE Jai Sohan Singh, Ambassador of Singapore and chairman, ASEAN Committee Qatar; Brig Saqib Ilyas, Defence Attache of Pakistan and head of Defence Attaches Group, Qatar, were present at the reception.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, Jian said that China seeks to increase LNG import from Qatar for its focus on clean environment and to become the largest importer of LNG from Qatar.
He said China and Qatar are strategic partners. “We are together, both in joys and sorrows. At the height of China’s fight against COVID-19, the Amir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani called President Xi Jinping, stressing Qatar’s full confidence in China’s capability to beat the virus and Qatar’s readiness to help China.”
Besides, the Qatari government, along with some Qatari corporations, has donated 300 tonnes of medical supplies, including surgical masks and disinfectants to China. Qatar Airways transported Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to China through its global network for free.
“We have provided convenience for Qatar within four days to urgently purchase four million surgical masks and 640,000 bottles of disinfectants from China. We have also worked together with Qatar Airways to deliver supplies around the world through its green channel,” the ambassador added.
Chinese companies in Qatar donated one million pairs of surgical gloves and 7,000 sets of protective gowns to Qatar amid the pandemic.
“Both China and Qatar have worked together in this global fight against COVID-19. Together, we oppose politicising the pandemic or attaching a geographic label to the virus. We also provide support to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).”
He praised Qatar for providing more than 20 countries with medical supplies, donating $140 million to medical institutions and helping overseas nationals return home safely.
On cooperation between China and Qatar under the Belt and Road framework, the ambassador said it has made progress despite the pandemic. “The two countries signed a contract for building LNG ships, which will further expand Qatar’s LNG fleet. China Railway Construction Corporation Ltd is working on the construction of Lusail Stadium in order to have it ready before the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The green, intelligent and water-saving technology developed by China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has been adopted in Qatar, contributing to Qatar’s sustainable development,” he said.
“In the second place, we should oppose unilateralism and insist on multilateralism. A handful of countries are obsessed with making unilateral moves, withdrawing from international bodies and treaties, and blaming others for their own woes, which severely undermines the existing international order and the system of global governance,” he added.
In his concluding remarks, Zhou Jian said that camels are the symbol of the ancient Silk Road, also the closest friend of the Arab people. Being resilient and tenacious, camels always carry loads and hopes, he said.
