Beirut
A fire broke out on Tuesday at a department store under construction in central Beirut, just metres from where a devastating explosion ripped through the Lebanese capital’s port on August 4.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire at the building designed by the late Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, a civil defence volunteer said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Local residents said the heavy smoke caused panic, as this is the third fire in the area within a week.
On Thursday, a huge fire broke out in one of the warehouses inside Beirut port, causing panic among residents still traumatized by the August blast, which was set off by a small fire.
The explosion was triggered by a fire in a warehouse storing 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate. More than 190 people were killed and some 6,000 wounded in the blast, which left around 300,000 people homeless. The exact circumstances of the blast are still under investigation.
