Shura takes part in parliamentary
debate on democracy and COVID-19
The Shura Council on Tuesday took part in a virtual parliamentary panel debate on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy entitled ‘COVID-19 and Democracy: Can Parliaments Come to the Rescue?’ hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Julie Ann Wrigley Laboratory at Arizona State University. Discussions during the debate focused on the democratic practices that took place during the coronavirus pandemic and the challenges that parliaments faced from postponing elections, reducing individual freedoms and abusing power, and if parliaments can learn from past months to become stronger and more effective institutions to better serve the people. The Shura Council was represented by HE Mohammed bin Khalid Al Ghanim. (QNA)
