Qatar has affirmed that the continuing unjust blockade imposed on it by some countries, with no signs of solutions in sight, would encourage more violations of different kinds.
“After over three years since the start of the blockade and the unilateral coercive measures imposed by some countries in the region based on invalid argument, the blockade left nothing but gross violations of human rights of individuals and families, including citizens of the blockading countries themselves,” said Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador HE Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri. He was speaking at the 45th session of the Human Rights Council within the general debate on the High Commissioner’s global human rights update.
Mansouri pointed to the High Commissioner’s statement that the responsibility of his office and the Human Rights Council is to promote measures that help states ensure that they fulfil their obligations in the field of human rights.
“From this standpoint, it is the duty of this council and the Office of the High Commissioner to work on ending this blockade and stop the resulting human rights violations,” he said, calling on the High Commissioner to take measures to follow up on the results of the visit of the technical mission, which visited Doha about three years ago and learned about the human rights violations committed during the crisis.
Qatar’s envoy reiterated that the repeated Israeli attacks and the continued unjust blockade on the Gaza Strip are flagrant violations of international laws, causing severe human suffering in the Strip.
Mansouri renewed Qatar’s call to the international community to work for an immediate end to the blockade and to open all crossings to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, as well as to support efforts to rebuild the Strip in a way that preserves the rights and dignity of its residents.
With regard to Syria, Mansouri expressed grave concern about the complete helplessness of the international community in making any progress related to a comprehensive cessation of fighting in the country, in pushing the political process on the basis of the Geneva Declaration 1 and implementation of
Resolution 2254, and ending the state of impunity to achieve justice and hold perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity
accountable.
On Afghanistan, Mansouri reiterated Qatar’s commitment to continue providing political support for the peace process and hosting the historic negotiations to reach a political solution that guarantees an end to the war in the country, achieving national reconciliation and meeting the aspirations of the Afghan people for security, prosperity and to build a state of law and institutions.
