THE Public Works Authority (Ashghal) on Tuesday announced the commencement of Al-Wajba East Roads and Infrastructure Project (Package 1) as part of its plan to provide an integrated infrastructure and an advanced roads network throughout the country.
The project, which is located in the East Al-Wajba area, west of Umm Al-Dome Street and north of Rawdat Al-Naser Street, aims to provide a network of internal streets in the area and raise the level of safety on it, in addition to creating an integrated infrastructure to respond to the requirements of the population and urban growth in the future.
The project has been divided into three geographical areas, which will be implemented in succession, and each phase will take one year to complete. The project works are scheduled to be completed in Q2 of 2023.
This project is being implemented by Galfar Al Misnad Engineering and Contracting Company at a cost of about QR263 million. Engineer Mohammed Al Ateeq, project engineer in the Western Areas Projects Section of the Roads Projects Department at Ashghal, said the project serves 368 citizens’ sub-divisions in Al-Wajba East, and includes implementing a 17-km road network to enhance the traffic flow and provide connection with the future public facilities in the area. This is in addition to providing traffic safety elements, such as street lighting systems and poles, signboards and road marking. The project will also provide 34 km of shared pedestrian and cycle paths, and 2,570 parking bays.
Eng Ateeq added that the infrastructure works in the project include a 14-km-long sewage network, a 16.6-km surface and groundwater drainage network, a 10.7-km treated water network, in addition to extending potable water pipes and connecting them to the main drinking water network.
It is worth noting that local materials and manufacturers will be relied on in the implementation of the project. Materials and elements such as gabbro, columns, lighting lamps, signboards, sewage and rainwater drainage pipes, asphalt and prefabricated manholes, in addition to concrete and steel reinforcement will be supplied from local Qatari factories. The target is for the local component to reach 85 percent of the project’s work. This comes as part of Ashghal’s support for local manufacturers and the ‘Taheel’ initiative launched by the authority in 2017. (TNN)
