Running in the colours of her breeder, Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani, the three-year-old Purebred Arabian filly Safaa (FR) (General x Sahaba Al Uraiq) opened her account at Dax, France, on Sunday winning the Prix Saint-Laurent, a conditions race for three-year-old Purebred Arabians over seven furlongs.
The grey filly managed to get off the mark in just her third career start. Her debut was in a 1,900m race at La Teste Buch on 25 July and she was a bit green. However, she benefited from that experience and learned the lesson. In her second start, she showed much improvement to finish third in a seven-furlong race at Vichy on 15 August. It was clear this distance suited her well and she proved that winning her latest start over the same distance on Sunday.
Trained by Francois Rohaut and ridden by Valentin Seguy, Safaa was one of the nine runners who lined up in the Prix Saint-Laurent race. She followed the pace in the early stages. Then, she came up the middle of the straight and was brave to continue her acceleration to the line, fending off an attack from the fast-finishing Hazzam (Al Mamun Monlau x Fidwah), who finished second by a neck in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing. He is trained by Thomas Fourcy and was ridden by Jerome Cabre.
The debutant, Umran (Mister Ginoux x Dixie Darling) was further two lengths behind in third completing the frame for Qatari owners and giving Al Shaqab Racing another top place in the race. He is trained by Mrs JF. Bernard and was ridden by Antoine Werle.
Safaa is a daughter of General, the multi Gr P/A winner, including among others the Gr1 P/A Qatar Arabian World Cup at ParisLongchamp in 2009 and 2010. She is out of Sahaba Al Uraiq (AF Albahar).
