The Committee for the Removal of Neglected Cars and the Management of Mechanical Equipment and General Cleaning, in cooperation with Umm Salal Municipality on Thursday launched the fifth joint campaign to remove abandoned cars within the municipality’s administrative borders.
The campaign is part of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s (MME) efforts to limit the phenomenon of abandoned vehicles that distorts the environment’s aesthetics view, in implementation of Law No 18 of 2017 on public hygiene.
The launch was attended by Muhammad Faraj Al Kubaisi, assistant director of the Cleaning Department and a member of the Committee for the Removal of Neglected Cars, Marzouq Mubarak Al Misifri, assistant director of the Mechanical Equipment Department and a member of the committee, Lieutenant Yusef Fahd Al Ali from the General Traffic and Patrols Department and a member of the committee, Lieutenant Muhammad Jassim Al Tamimi from Lekhwiya Force, Jassim Muhammad Al Kubaisi, head of the General Control Department in Umm Salal Municipality, and a number of municipality employees and representatives of the concerned authorities at the Ministry of Interior and Lekhwiya Force.
Speaking on the occasion, Muhammad Faraj Al Kubaisi said, “Today’s campaign targets Umm Salal Municipality and its administrative borders for a period of one week until the completion of the removal of all the abandoned vehicles in Umm Salal. The campaign comes within the framework of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment’s continuous efforts to reduce this phenomenon.”
He said the committee seeks to intensify its efforts as required to remove all neglected vehicles and equipment from all regions of the country, in coordination with the competent authorities in the committee.
He also called on the public to cooperate with the official authorities to accomplish the task.
He pointed out that the phenomenon of neglected cars will be confronted by intensifying campaigns and awareness and alerting car owners not to abandon their vehicles, as these cars are located in most residential areas, industrial workshops and other areas.
On his part, Mesifri said the committee has removed more than 81,000 neglected cars from all regions of the country since its formation.
He said the committee has identified about 70 to 100 abandoned cars within the administrative boundaries of Umm Slal Municipality, in coordination with the General Control Department of Umm Salal Municipality.
Lieutenant Ali said the campaign aims to remove the abandoned cars and take them to dedicated yards before their licences will be canceled if they are not claimed within three months according to the law.
On his part, Lieutenant Tamimi said Lekhwiya Force is cooperating with the committee to ensure all abandoned vehicles across the country are removed. He said Lekhwiya conducts patrols to maintain public security and participate in the process of removing abandoned cars with a number of its equipment.
Jassim Muhammad Al Kubaisi said the committee will take the campaign to other areas after completing the mission in Umm Salal Municipality.
