The Heads of Mission of European Union (EU) Member States in Qatar and the Delegation of the European Union accredited to Qatar have lauded Qatar for the recent labour law reforms and new legislation introducing a minimum wage and abolishing No Objection Certificates (NOC) for employees to easily change jobs.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the heads of mission said, “We, the EU Heads of Mission in Qatar, welcome the historic decision taken by the Qatari authorities to introduce a non-discriminatory minimum wage, including for domestic workers, making Qatar the first country in the region to take this step.
“We also welcome the decision taken by the Qatari authorities to end the requirement for migrant workers to obtain their employer’s consent to change jobs and to abolish the so-called No Objection Certificates.”
The statement added, “We commend the Qatari authorities for delivering on their commitment to improve the situation of migrant workers with a series of seminal reforms of Qatar’s labour market and for effectively dismantling the ‘kafala’ system. (TNN)
“We appreciate the continued commitment of the Qatari authorities, in particular the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs to the effective implementation of its labour reforms and commend the International Labor Organization’s Qatar Office for its crucial support (https://www.ilo.org/beirut/countries/qatar/lang--en/index.htm). These new pieces of legislation are an important step in this process. The European Union and its Member States continue to stand ready to support Qatar in the implementation of these reforms.”
