Sohni Dharti Forum organised an online competition to understand how children perceive lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic situation.
“A versatile programme was arranged by Sohni Dharti in view of the interest, abilities and talent of our community youths. The main aim of the programme was to engage children in a positive activity and to give them a healthy platform during the lockdown. We planned the competition considering the current situation and the feelings of our young children, and set the theme according to the current lockdown situation,” said Sohni Dharti chairman Saleem Baloch.
Three age groups were formed and three different topics were provided to them according to the age groups. The topics included: 1) Draw/design your own mask; 2) Your observation about the parks during pandemic situation and 3) Health-related physical exercises during the pandemic time.
The program was launched through Sohni Dharti social groups. “To our surprise, the response was overwhelming. Children started practicing from their homes and were very much excited to participate in the contest. Zoom meeting was arranged for online competition and a number of executive committee members were available to observe live paintings. The participants showed art sheets while working with passion and interest. The children demonstrated utmost discipline and the competition concluded after 90 minutes. Art work was collected by our team and handed over to the jury for results. The artwork of every child was outstanding and it was very hard to decide the winners,” remarked Baloch. As per the declaration of the panel of judges, the following children won the competition in each category:
In age group of 4-7 years, Hafsa Rizwan came first, while Yumna Afzaal and Umaimah Khayam came second and third, respectively.
In the age group 8-11, Ayesha Arif got the first position while Maida Shahid came second and Muhammad Hamza Rizwan got the third position.
In age group 12-16, Fatima Ahmed came first, while Muhammad Ahmed Bhatti and Fiza Muhammad Amjad got the second and third positions, respectively.
Ladies Coordinator of Sohni Dharti Humaira Masoud said: “The art contest was a magnificent platform for the execution of innovative ideas with self assurance. Since the competition was organised during the lockdown situation, it successfully defused the negativity and brought forth a message of hope, like the first beam of sun which breaks the darkness and brings a vivid morning.”
“Painting and drawing help children to develop their visual skills. These skills help children to analyse and make choices based on insightful information. Creating arts also assists with developing of thinking, which includes working memory, mental flexibility and self-control. With this in mind, Sohni Dharti thought of an art competition in which children could show their skills and their thinking with the help of their imaginations. This art competition was as successful and exciting as last year’s competition, but this year children were more excited and practiced hard before the competition, which we saw in their art: How happy and satisfied they were for this day,” remarked Sobia Arif, another Ladies Coordinator.
Shabbir Siddiqui, the Future Leaders program lead, said that art is not only considered an essential part of all cultures but also provides the sense to feel, observe and study the nature. “Having aesthetic sense, a person can perform better in every field, including medicine, engineering, architecture and even in the fields of banking, business and marketing. We are pleased to see the performance of our youth. Each and every artwork was so impressive that it was very difficult for our judges to decide the winners. Our children are highly creative, talented and capable of doing wonders. They have immense potential to be the bright stars on the skies. They have enormous control on their sketches, brushes strokes and usage of colours. I’m happy to see the brilliant performance of our young future leaders. Actually, it was our chance to learn from them. We learnt from their talent, abilities, feelings and enthusiasm,” remarked Siddiqui.
Sohni Dharti Chairman Saleem Baloch expressed his gratitude to the entire team. “I’m very thankful to our team, especially to our ladies co-coordinators for their tireless support in organising the event. I’m also indebted to SD excom for their efforts and support to make the event a great success. I would like to mention the name of Amjad Saleem who created wonderful videos of the event. Last but not the least, many thanks to our panel of judges,” said Baloch.
