THE US Assistant Secretary of Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker has described Qatar as a strong and key regional partner in countering terrorism and combating the financing of terrorism in a video press roundtable held on Monday.
The top US official is in Doha to meet with the country’s senior government officials to mainly discuss counterterrorism and regional security issues.
Schenker told the local media that the US State Department applauds Qatar for the implementation of the new anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism legislation.
Similarly, he extended the US appreciation for Qatar’s role as an active partner in the global coalition to defeat a terrorist organisation like the ISIS and cited that the allegations against Qatar are inconsistent with the country’s strong commitment to combating global terrorism and dedication to partnership with the US on counterterrorism and regional security.
“Our close ties with Qatar are indispensable for maintaining security in the Gulf region, and we’ll continue to work closely together to stop the financing of the terrorist organisations. It’s no secret that we greatly value our strategic military partnership with Qatar. It’s one of our closest military allies in the region”, he said.
With more than 8000 US military personnel housed at the Al Udeid Air Base, Schenker further reiterated the strong military partnership between the US and Qatar and their joint efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
Schenker also said that the two countries are set to discuss wide-range of topics during the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue tentatively scheduled for later this month. The planned agenda will include high-level discussions on trade, investment, education, culture, labour rights, regional security and defence cooperation as well as law enforcement and counterterrorism.
He also said discussions will be held on public health collaboration, including efforts of the two countries together to combat COVID-19. Schenker said the range of topics to be tabled during the dialogue is a testament of US-Qatar relationship beyond security and military partnership.
He also said that the US-Qatar Strategic Dialogue highlights the two countries’ close cooperation on issues that are central to the bilateral relationship and will include several new education, scientific and cultural initiatives in Qatar, in part to preview the dialogue.
According to him, an agreement on cultural exchanges will be signed between the two countries this year and further talks will take place on the Qatar-US 2021 Year of Culture. He also mentioned the interest of US in increasing its people-to-people relationship with Qatar by inviting more Qataris to avail the top quality education in the US.
Following his trip to Doha, Schenker will be heading to Beirut. The official thanked the government of Qatar and its leadership for working with its Air Force Central Command to deliver private donations to Beirut earlier this month.
He said, “It was a real testament to the mutual support and friendship among our countries, as well as our profound sorrow and sympathy with the Lebanese people who have suffered so much. The US values its strategic relationship with Qatar and I look forward on this trip to further strengthen the ties between our two countries and working with Qatar to make the region more stable and peaceful
for all.”
