Ambassador of Nepal to Qatar HE Dr Narad Nath Bharadwaj has expressed gratitude to the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on behalf of the Nepalese community, for taking historic step to enhance the dignity of workers in Qatar.
The Nepalese envoy said the decision of the government of Qatar to raise the minimum wages of workers is a forward-looking initiative that has addressed a long standing grievance persisting in the workers’ community.
He said the abolition of the requirement for the no objection certificate (NOC) from employers for changing jobs, has reiterated the workers’ freedom to choose jobs.
In a Twitter message, Ambassador of China to Qatar HE Zhou Jiang termed the labour reforms by Qatar as a historical step, a remarkable achievement and the Qatar government’s commitment to the care of migrant workers and human rights.
He said the decision will play a major role in labour reforms in the region.
In his message, Ambassador of Vietnam to Qatar HE Nguyen Dinh Thao welcomed the new step in Qatar’s labour reforms, which sets a non-discriminatory minimum wage for workers and removes the NOC requirement for employees to change jobs.
He described it as a significant move by the government of Qatar to further protect the rights of labourers.
He said at present, many Vietnamese are working in Qatar in various fields and the decision is good news to them as it would further protect their rights and facilitate the process of changing jobs. He hoped the government of Qatar would provide more favourable conditions to expatriate workforce.
Expressing his appreciation to the government on the labour reforms, Maulana Syahid, charge d’ Affaires at Indonesia Embassy, said: “We support and appreciate the government of Qatar’s effort to provide conducive work atmosphere for migrant workers by applying international standard of employment. We see the decision as a significant change to benefit migrant workers in Qatar.”
