THE Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association Qatar (AMUAAQ), affiliated to the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), which operates under the aegis of the Embassy of India, Qatar, organised a webinar recently on the trending topic of ‘New Education Policy 2020’, on Zoom application.
Speaking at the webinar attended by more than 650 people, the chief guest, Prof Faizan Mustafa, vice-chancellor, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, praised the new policy saying: “The liberal policy together with the choice based credit system offered by the University Grants Commission will allow students to pursue their passions, paving way for a new era in Indian education system.”
The moderator at the event was Dr Zahidul Haque, associate professor, University of Hyderabad. Prominent among the attendees were Dr MS Bukhari, chief patron AMUAAQ, and Prof MM Sufyan Beg, principal ZH College of Engineering and Technology and?chairman of AMU Alumni Affairs Committee, Aligarh.
Prof Mustafa said the new education policy focused on the flexibility of subjects with interdisciplinary courses, which was a good move. He also lauded the decision to set up foreign universities, noting that it should have been done in 2010 itself when it was proposed for the first time.
Prof Mustafa also appreciated the syllabus reduction by 30 percent, direct admission to PhD, revision of board of directors system and focus on teachers’ training. He, however, stressed the need for establishing more minority universities.
Furthermore, he welcomed the focus on inter-disciplinary learning in higher education and teaching in mother tongue and regional languages in the foundation years.
He also called for allocation of six per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to education by states as well as the central governments, as approximately 90 percent of the budget is spent on salaries and pensions and only10-12 percent on development, research and infrastructures.
Meanwhile, Dr MS Bukhari urged AMU alumni to work towards the benefit of their alma mater. Stressing the importance of staying connected through online events, he said, “It is the new norm as the COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted regular gatherings.
