The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has allocated land for construction of a new plaza in Doha Municipality to serve as entertainment area for residents in the neighbourhoods and visitors, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at the Ashghal has started construction works at the plaza project scheduled to be completed and opened for public in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Mohamed Ali Al Khouri, director of Public Parks Department at MME, said the department is implementing a comprehensive plan aiming to increase the green areas in Qatar and planting more trees.
He said various entities are coordinating with concerned authorities to allocate lands for construction of parks and plaza in all municipalities in Qatar to meet leisure needs of the people residing in different areas of the State.
He added that a land area of around 13,000 square metres has been allocated for construction of a new green plaza in the West Bay area within Doha Municipality.
Jassem bin Najem Ali Al Khulaifi, a member of the Central Municipal Council – First Constituency, said Qatar attaches great importance to increasing green areas and establishing parks and plazas.
He added that the plaza will serve the people of the constituency, as it includes walking and family seating areas, adding that it will also encourage people to practise sports and have a healthy lifestyle, especially as it is located in a vital area near the Corniche.
He said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ashghal, represented by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, for their efforts in beautification projects and its positive response to the requirements of the people of the First Constituency areas.”
On her part, Engineer Maryam Al Kuwari, project design manager at the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at Ashghal, said that the salient feature of the plaza’s design is inspired by Qatari postage stamps, which will create the first impression among the visitor as a spatial and functional extension of the Q-Post building because of its important place in the hearts of the people of Qatar over the past years.
The plaza will consist of three interconnected postal stamps forming harmonious lines and open spaces to be used for events and festivals at a distinguished location in the heart of the city near Q-Post building and Doha Corniche, with proximity to Corniche Metro Station.
Eng Kuwari added that the project includes open green areas that include more than 200 trees and extends over an area of 13,600 square metres, with dedicated areas for family leisure and sport areas. The project also includes construction of 900 metres of jogging tracks, 1.5 kilometres of cycling paths, as well as a walkway designated for hiking.
The project also includes provision of service buildings that include prayer hall and washrooms. Infrastructure works will be implemented, including construction of sewage networks, irrigation lines, electricity line and installation of Lighting poles and others.
Eng Kuwari added that visitors to Post Office Plaza can use the car parks designated for the post office building adjacent to the plaza.
The Post Office Plaza Project is a people with special needs friendly project with additional ramps and dedicated parking spaces connected to the plaza.
