Hong Kong reported 69 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, according to the latest figures from the Centre for Health Protection.
Of these, 67 were local infections and two were imported, bringing the total number of cases in the city up to 4,007.  Hong Kong is continuing to struggle with a third wave of infections that has resulted in the most serious outbreak it has yet experienced, killing 42 people so far.
Experts believe that the latest wave is the result of wide-ranging exemptions to preventive measures introduced by the government, allowing more than a quarter of a million visitors to move freely in the city without quarantine or testing.
With strict measures in place banning gatherings of more than two people and barring restaurants from serving customers in-house in the evening, Saturday marked the sixth consecutive day of new cases numbering below 100.
In late July, the city endured 12 straight days of triple-figure COVID-19 infections.
