WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said Germany made a “fortune” from US military personnel stationed there, amid plans to withdraw troops from the country.
“They make a fortune off the troops, you know they built cities around our troops,” Trump said in an interview on the Fox News channel.
The president repeated his accusation that Germany was “very delinquent” and “took advantage” of the United States.
“They owed us billions of dollars, billions of dollars to NATO,” he said. “They’re a rich country, they should be paying their bills. Why should we defend countries and not be reimbursed?”
Defence Secretary Mark Esper last week said the US plans to withdraw 11,900 military personnel from Germany - down to 24,000 from 36,000. (DPA)
