Dhaka At least 17 people were killed in north-eastern Bangladesh when their boat capsized in a so-called haor, a body of water that forms during the monsoon season, an official said on Wednesday.
The engine-propelled boat carrying 48 passengers sank in the Gobindasree haor of the Netrokona district, more than 120 kilometres north-east of the capital Dhaka, local government official Bulbul Ahmed said. The boat might have capsized after it was caught in stormy weather, he said. The victims, students and teachers of a a Muslim religious school from neighbouring Mymensingh district, were visiting the body of water on the boat, the official added. (DPA)
