Substitute Saoud Farhan’s stoppage-time goal on Saturday ensured Al Shahania continue their impressive run since the QNB Stars League’s restart with a crucial 2-2 draw against Al Sailiya.
The draw moves Shahania to 14 points, level with 11th-placed Al Khor who play Al Wakrah on Sunday at the
Al Janoub Stadium.
In the day’s early kick-off clash, Al Rayyan’s effort to go one point atop the league standings were thwarted by an outstanding display by Al Arabi’s young goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada as the game ended a frustrating goalless draw for the Lions.
Al Rayyan’s draw means Al Duhail on 43 points can extend their lead at the top to four points with a win against Al Gharafa on Sunday.
Al Shahania started brightly and were soon ahead from the penalty spot as the in-form Ramin Rezaeian converted from the spot 21 minutes in.
However, Al Sailiya bagged two goals in three minutes as Nadir Belhadj super strike from range beat Ebrahim Mordou 13 minutes from halftime. Mohammed Zraiq made it two for the Peregrines three minutes later with a sumptuous dink over the onrushing Mordou.
Al Shahania though, secured a point at the death as Farhan showed composure in the box to slot past Amine Lecomte in added time.
Abunada saves the day for Al Arabi
Diego Aguirre cut a frustrated figure, Yacine Brahimi could not stop the head shake in disbelief as Al Rayyan, and Al Arabi fought out an entertaining goalless draw.
Al Arabi dominated the first 30 minutes of the match and should have scored, but Hamdi Harbaoui dragged his penalty narrowly wide after Dame fouled Pierre-Michel Lasogga in the box.
Al Rayyan soon got into the game, but Abunada was on hand to save Brahimi’s free-kick. The young goalkeeper, with Qatar coach Felix Sanchez watching, produced another brilliant save from Brahimi and then Abdulaziz Hatem just before half time.
Al Rayyan continued the second half on the attack. Still, Abunada was in inspiring form as he produced a triple save to thwart Abdulrahman al Harazi twice and Hatem’s goalbound effort as Heimir Hallgrimsson’s men held on for a point. Results
