Five Filipino community leaders from Qatar nominated by the Reformed OFW Initiative (ROI) were among the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) based in different countries who attended the video conferencing for Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) held recently.
The Overseas Filipino leaders received official invitation from the Presidential Communications Organising Office (PCOO). It was organised by the United Filipino Group (UFG).
Duterte delivered his fifth SONA from the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City in the Philippines that lasted for almost two hours.
The OFWs from Qatar who attended the SONA were Joseph Timothy Rivera representing PDP LABAN Qatar Council, Greg Loayon of the Philippine Business Council Qatar (PBCQ), Joy Ferrer of the Association of Filipino Realtors & Entrepreneur Executives in Qatar (AFREEQ), Dale Allado of the Guardians League Qatar and Mary Jill Lluz of AKO-OFW Qatar Chapter.
They were joined by 148 other OFW leaders across the world whose live Zoom attendees were flashes at least three times during
Duterte’s speechas part of the official audience.
As per protocols laid out by Malaca?an Palace, the seat of Philippine government, all attendees were required to wear traditional Filipino attire, business and formal wears as they also stood in front of their respective cameras during standing ovations whenever Duterte made remarkable points such as his emphasis on the urgent passing of the law that would create the Department of OFWs.
“Though the SONA was streamed live by RTVM through most media channels and social media platforms such as Facebook watch and YouTube and could be watched by anyone around the world in real-time, being part of the officially invited virtual audience with interactive capabilities that attended President Duterte’s fifth SONA has been an honour and a true experience” shared Joseph Timothy Rivera who is also the Lead Convenor of Reformed OFW Initiative.
He added, “The event was the first ever SONA wherein a significantly large audience from the OFW sector was invited and is definitely a milestone.”
