Tokyo The number of overseas visitors to Japan plunged by 99.9 per cent in June compared to a year earlier, as pandemic-related travel restrictions decimate the tourism industry, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) said on Wednesday.
Japan received only 2,600 visitors in June, compared with 2.88 million people during the same month last year, the JNTO said in a statement.
The pandemic led the government to impose an entry ban on visitors from 129 countries and regions, including South Korea, the United States and China, its biggest tourism market.
Japan’s economy has become increasingly dependent on overseas tourists in recent years and officials have organized aggressive campaigns abroad, especially in other Asian countries, to promote the tourism industry. (DPA)
