Afghan border force checkpoints reportedly came under artillery attack on Wednesday, according to a provincial councillor and the spokesman for the province’s police chief.
The clashes have left four civilians dead on the Afghan side, and wounded a further eight others in the Sarkano district of the province, according to police chief spokesman Faridullah Dehqan.
The Afghan forces stationed there responded to the attacks, according to Dehqan.
Local officials blamed Pakistani armed forces for the shelling.
Meanwhile, Pakistani officials said in reaction to the reports that while sometimes the Pakistani military chased some armed groups stationed in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, they denied any incident on Wednesday.
According to officials in Kunar, artillery attacks by Pakistani forces are not new in the district, with them often targeting members of the security forces and civilians in the district. Recently, a Pakistani spy drone crashed in the same district and was recovered by Afghan officials.
In the past the Pakistani military has staged artillery and mortar attacks on Afghan territory in the provinces of Kunar, Nuristan and Nangarhar.
