Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary-General for the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy termed the revealing of the stadiums for the opening game and the final of FIFA World Cup Qatar and the confirmation of match schedule as a major milestone to the road to 2022.
“It is extremely important because before the Supreme Committee used to talk about future developments and infrastructure. Now, with almost everything in place it is great to announce the official schedule for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” said Thawadi in an interview.
On what makes the 2022 FIFA World Cup special, Thawadi said:,“Firstly, fans can watch more than one match in a day. It is special because stadiums are so close to each other. That is a great opportunity for fans to watch 2 games in a day – something that was not possible in other tournaments.
“Second, fans do not need to travel to follow their team. As soon as they reach Qatar, they can stay in one hotel and all they have to think about is the football matches.
“Third, this is the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted by a Middle Eastern Arab country. It is an opportunity to bring cultures together and for people from different backgrounds and nationalities to come together.
“It is also very special for all of us to celebrate overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic as one. It
will be great for all of us to
celebrate this for the first time in Qatar in 2022.”
Meanwhile, FIFA, the world football governing body, said: “The tournament’s compact nature - with no air travel needed to move between the venues – will allow organisers, for the first time, to optimise specific match demands for the benefit and comfort of fans, teams and media.”
Four matches a day will be played in the group stage of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Qatar will play the opening match at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium at 1 pm (1000 GMT) on November 21, 2022 while the final will be staged at the 80,000-strong Lusail Stadium on December 18.
