Qatar coach Felix Sanchez has been selected as one of the top nine great AFC coaches amongst 16 coaches to have won the Asian Cup in its 64-year-history. The AFC has asked fans to vote for the greatest on their website.
Sanchez led Al Annabi to their first continental triumph – 2019 Asian Cup title in the UAE. The Qatari team was dominant throughout the competition winning all seven matches on way to the title while conceding just one goal. The tournament also saw Qatar’s Almoez Ali break the tournament’s goalscoring record set by legendary Iranian Ali Daei.
Few observers had pencilled Qatar in as pre-tournament favourites for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, but the Félix S?nchez-led side produced a superb month of football in the first ever 24-team AFC Asian Cup.
With Asian glory achieved, Sanchez is now tasked with leading Qatar at their first FIFA World Cup, which
West Asia will host in 2022.
The Spaniard is listed amongst top coaches to have graced the continent like KSA’s Khalil al Zayani who won the trophy in 1984 with Saudi Arabia, Iran’s 1972 winning coach Mohammad Ranjbar, Heshmat Mohajrenai of Iran who won the titles in 1976 with Iran, and led the UAE to the group stage in 1980.
Legendary Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira is the only man to win the AFC Asian Cup with two different countries, leading Kuwait to glory in 1980, before repeating the success with Saudi Arabia eight years later.
Also, Australia’s Ange Postecoglou makes the cut after masterminding Australia’s greatest footballing moment on the continent on home soil in 2015.
Another Brailian Zico who had a phenomenal career as a player took Japan to the pinnacle of Asian football in 2004. Japan’s victory in the 2004 tournament – their third Asian title in four attempts since 1992 – was confirmed with a 3-1 win over hosts China PR in a tense final in Beijing,
Other to make the cut are French coach Philippe Troussier whose Japan side lifted the title in Lebanon in 2000, Iraq’s legendary 2007 coach Jorvan Vieira and Italy’s Alberto Zaccheroni whose Japan side won a record fourth title in Qatar in 2011.
Fans can vote for the gretatest coach of their choice on on the Asian Football Confederation website, voting will close on July 20.
