Bangkok Thai activists submitted a petition on Monday asking the government to increase pensions paid to people over 60.
The petition, signed by over 13,000 people, demanded that the prime minister approve a new pension bill that has not seen progress since it was submitted to his office in November last year.
The bill would increase the amount of pensions to 3,000 baht (100 dollars) a month from the current rate of 600 baht a month.
Around 300 people marched from the United Nations’ headquarters in Bangkok to Government House to submit the petition which was received by Deputy Prime Minister Jurin Laksanawisit.
The activists said in a statement that increasing pensions would help lift retirees over the poverty line which complies with one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Jurin said he would forward the activists’ demands to the prime minister’s office and Finance Ministry. (DPA)
