A 15-year-old boy was killed in a suspected shark attack on Australia’s east coast on Saturday, police said.
Witnesses told police that a shark attacked the teenager while he was surfing on Saturday afternoon at Wooli Beach near Grafton, 611 kilometres north of Sydney.
Several surfers came to his assistance and pulled the badly bleeding boy to the beach.
“First aid was rendered for serious injuries to his legs, and despite CPR efforts to revive him, the [boy] died at the scene,” police said in a statement.
Police originally gave the victim’s age as 17.
Beaches in the area were closed while police and fishery officials investigated the tragic incident.
It is the fifth Australian shark fatality so far this year, making 2020 already one of the deadliest for shark attacks. Another three people were badly injured by sharks but survived.
Until 2020, shark fatalities around Australia averaged just one a year. There were no fatal shark attacks in 2019.
Last week, a 36-year-old spear fisherman was killed by a shark off Fraser Island on the east coast.
