Beijing China said the United States had “ulterior motives” for dispatching two aircraft carriers to the South China Sea, in the latest show of military might between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday the US intended to show off its military force in waters that Beijing claims as its own.
The two US Navy ships carried out exercises in the South China Sea last week, just as Beijing wrapped up five days of military drills near the Paracel Islands. The island chain, known in China as Xisha, is also claimed by Vietnam and Taiwan. It was the first time since 2014 that two US carriers operated together in the South China Sea, a US Navy spokesperson told CNN. (DPA)
