COVID-19 infections in India crossed the 600,000 mark Thursday with the virus spreading at a rapid pace as the country gradually eases its lockdown.
The number of infections countrywide is 604,641, with 17,834 deaths, according to Health Ministry data. India is the fourth worst-hit nation after the United States, Brazil and Russia.
India, which introduced one of the world’s most stringent lockdowns on March 25, has been easing up since mid-May. More domestic flights and trains are resuming this week.
Several areas have, however, announced fresh lockdowns and restrictions as a result of case spikes, including Mumbai and Chennai.
Residents in seven of nine civic corporation areas of Mumbai had been asked to stay at home for the next 10 days, Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation spokesman said. Only medical stores would be open and essential goods would be delivered to homes in some areas while grocery stores would be open for a couple of hours daily in others. Police were keeping strict vigil on the movement of people.
Tamil Nadu capital Chennai is under a complete lockdown till July 31.
In national capital Delhi, also an epicentre of the disease, strict restrictions are being maintained in over 260 containment zones.
Nearly 360,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 so far according to the Health Ministry which says there is a recovery rate of over 59 per cent.
