Nouakchott Violent extremism in West Africa and the Libyan crisis are contributing to unrest in the Sahel region, Mauritania’s President Mohammed Ould Ghazouni told a summit on Tuesday bringing the French president and other African leaders together.
Extremism is expanding in a worrying manner in the region, said Ould Ghazouni, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the G5 Sahel group.
He warned that the crisis in Libya, where the struggle over power has turned the country into a battleground for rival proxy forces, is one of the main causes of the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region as it “feeds terrorist groups” with weapons and money. (DPA)
